How to Transfer to Another Team in Your Company - The Muse

How to Transfer to Another Team in Your Company - The MuseHow to Transfer to Another Team in Your Company Early in my career, I approached my babo about the possibility of joining another department. It seemed like something I could really enjoy, and a leader on that team mentioned to me in passing that I would be a great fit. However, despite that, it never happened. While I welches really confused about it at the time, Ive had a few years to think about what went wrong. And what I realized was that my approach made me seem like a selfish, me-first member of the team who didnt really know what he wanted- besides out.To help you avoid rubbing your boss the wrong way when youre ready to make this move, here are three things to keep in mind1. Focus on What Youre Currently Working OnHeres the thing When I tried to make a move to a different team, I mucksmuschenstill did everything I could to do my current job well. But I started spending too much time planning my hypothetical move, whic h had a profound effect on how I approached the responsibilities I actually had at work. While I technically did everything I needed to do, I wasnt exactly making a great case for my boss to put in a good recommendation to the leader of the team I wanted to join. So, when youve identified a department you want to transfer to, come up with a game plan for how to build your skills and present yourself as a great candidate. But, while youre doing that, make sure the projects youre currently working on are your main priority. Of course, this will pay huge dividends when a job youre interested becomes available. More importantly though, your current boss will respect your work ethic and be more likely to wish you the best- regardless of your next step.2. Ask Your Boss for Time to Speak Outside of Your Regular MeetingsHeres the biggest mistake I made. One-on-one meetings can be difficult to schedule, so whenever you get some time with your boss, its important to use it to discuss the task s you currently have on your plate. I tried to squeeze my internal transfer conversation into this meeting- the saatkorn one in which I brought up 12 other issues. Not only did this seem like a passing thought, but it also happened during a really busy season- so my boss really didnt have any time to discuss it or feel any urgency toward making it a priority. It might seem intimidating, but be bold and ask your boss for some time beyond your regular meetings to discuss a job youre interested in. By taking this one small step, youre making it clear that this is important to you, and you want to work together to make it a realistic possibility. 3. Have a Specific Job in MindThis one sounds obvious. But when I sat down with my boss at the time, the only thing I had prepared for the meeting was this sentence Im really interested in joining that other team in the other building. And the conversation really stalled there for a number of reasons. Of course, my boss thought I was just lookin g for a way off of his team. And even though that was true to some extent, I was really interested in the other departments work. However, there was an even bigger problem- there was no official opening on that team. Its exciting when you identify projects that you really want to work on. However, know that the conversation will flow much more naturally if your companys actually looking to add someone to that department with a skill set similar to yours. Its much more compelling to say that you heard the marketing teams starting to search for a candidate with a background in graphic design, which is right up your alley- rather than, I want to work in marketing. No boss ever wants to be sat down to hear that a member of his or her team wants to leave a specific position for a vague one that may or may not exist. Seriously, put yourself in your managers shoes and think about how this would sound. Lets assume that a few months from now, an internal opening on the team you want to join p ops up in your inbox. And lets say youve followed each of these tips- and theyve worked. Congrats Just remember that your transition time is even more important now than when you leave a job for another company- after all, youll still have to see these people, possibly a lot. So work hard up until the very end and make a strong effort to get everything all lined up for the person who will be replacing you. Photo of talking to boss courtesy of Shutterstock.

Pay for performance potentially contributing to mental health crisis

Pay for performance potentially contributing to mental health crisisPay for performance potentially contributing to mental health crisisA work culture study recently published in the journal Academy Of Management Discoveries establishes a correlation between employers adopting pay-for-performance methods and employees developing mental disorders.Proceeding with consideration of demographic, over 1,000 firms and prescription data of over 300,000 full-time employees ages 18-65, the study revealed a 4 to 6% increase in anti-depressant and anxiety medication usage when pay-for-performance was enacted (base rate of 5.2 to 5.7%.)Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe researchers of the study report, This change is strongest in low-performing and older workers. We also find that workers select in and out of P4P firms based on mental health considerations, which implies that mental health effects influence turnover.Older workers and women seemed to be particularly affected as female workers were found to depart from firms that switched to P4P more than male workers. The data suggests monetary incentive approaches may be costing corporations more money than the supposed benefits are worth. If this is reflective of a broader increase in stress and konjunkturtief in employees, the costs are very high, said study co-author Lamar PierceIs providing fiscal motivation worth its impact on wellness? The fruits of P4PA 2009 survey of over 138 organizations motions that P4P can be exceedingly beneficial if done correctly. According to data uncovered by Sibson, for true-effective pay for performance tactics, corporations need to initiate these key componentsHigher wage increase for top performersGive managers access to detailed rating and compensation dataA clear demarcation between compensation for high performers and really top performers Jim Kochanski, who is the Senior Vice Pr esident at Sibson, makes a compelling point about the way pay for performance can diminishentitlement mentalities amongst workers.AuthorLainie Petersen addresses another promising attribute that accompanies pay for pay performance tactics and that is the way it keeps your talented workers around. The more skilled the performer the more likely they will be approached by other firms. If you present an incentive to keep them around based on merit and their particular skills they will just as likely hang around to capitalize on their acumen.Unpacking monetary incentivesWhether through income bonuses, commissions or profit shares, does pay for pay actually present a substantial incentive for increased productivity? The contrary view seems to have legs.An argument can be made about the way P4P disrupts morale and teamwork. Bizfluent reports, Workers attempting to reach personal goals sometimes are less willing to be team players. They might be hesitant to provide assistance to struggling c oworkers because they view this as wasting valuable time that would be better used to improve their own productivity. In addition to expectations applied to employees, the very kind that the previously mentioned study from the journalAcademy Of Management Discoveries, believes to contribute to a workplace mental health crisis, supervisors are also met with the pressure to objectively determine which performances are outstanding enough to earn monetary rewards. This isnt always so cut and dry.Michael Beer, a prof at Harvard Business School, was emboldened in his belief that P4P plans typically backfire with his study that saw several firms drop them within three years of adopting them, statingFinancial rewards in a fast-changing business environment could undermine a companys ability to build trust and commitment unless management and employees have an honest discussion of their mutual expectations, they added. Studying by distance education

Studying by distance education Studying by distance educationPosted October 13, 2011, by Andrea Riddell Whether you are exploring new opportunities or brushing up on old skills, distance education and flexible learning courses can be a great way to advance your knowledge and career opportunities. Studying by distance, either part-time or full-time, gives you flexibility to learn in your own time. Gone are the days of fighting for car spots or tutorial spaces, and with distance education you will never be late for a lecture. Learning in the comfort of your own home (or wherever you choose to study) is ideal for people with erratic or busy work hours or commitments, like looking after children, or those with restricted mobility. Distance learning can also be a great alternative for people living in remote or difficult-to-reach areas or even overseas with limited access to education programs and facilities. Karen Hill chose to study a Certificate III in Aged Care with Open Colleges (formerly known as Cengage Education) from her home in Goulburn, in bestellung to continue working while she pursued a tertiary education. I saw ads for Open Colleges courses on television and thought I would give it a try. Its a great way to get a qualification while working full-time Id recommend it to anyone, says Hill. What is distance education? Distance education refers to the method of studying by distance. You are empowered with the flexibility of receiving your study materials via the Internet or through the mail, and you can choose your hours to study each week, from any location. While differing from regular university courses in terms of delivery, distance education offers a similar range of courses from traditional education providers. From management and nursing courses to education and engineering courses, distance education will give you the same qualification as if you had studied on campus. Most courses offered through distance education, from certificates to p ostgraduate qualifications, are nationally recognised and government-accredited. Despite the lack of face-to-face contact with lecturers and tutors, distance courses offer alternative methods of communication to provide top-notch student support. Students and staff are connected through phone, email, live chat and zugreifbar forums. Hill found the support offered for her distance education course helpful and often utilised the student forum to connect with fellow students. The support was great whenever you needed it. I also asked some questions and posted some replies on the student forum, says Hill. It was good to get some feedback and know that you werent the only one out there with that particular problem. Flexible learning Some distance education providers offer the choice of a mixture of learning modes such as online, correspondence or face-to-face. You may prefer to mix things up by studying part online and partly by attending on-campus classes. For some distance educati on courses you may be required to attend some components in person. Residential or summer schools are offered at specific times to give students a chance to undertake practical elements of their course as well as meet fellow students and lecturers in the flesh. Work placements are also mandatory for some of the more practical courses. If on-campus components are compulsory for the course you are interested in, you need to make sure that you can take time away from your commitments and can meet the associated financial costs, such as travel, meals and accommodation. Take control of your learning While there are many benefits to controlling your own timetable and taking your education into your own hands, you also need to remember that you alone are responsible for finding the time and motivation to learn and study. Sometimes it was difficult to juggle working with studying, but you just need to be organised, look at your schedule and plan when you have some free time, says Hill. Studying by distance also means that you miss out on the campus atmosphere, and it may be difficult to make friends with fellow students without face-to-face contact. Public Relations student Libby Mackenzie chose not only to study on campus but also to live on campus at Charles Sturt University, in order to gain some independence and experience new things. Its obviously an individual decision, but I loved living on campus. It broadens your life in so many different ways, and its not just an education, academic-wise, says Mackenzie. You need to ask what method of learning is most effective and attractive to you in light of your personal circumstances. Some people may find the lack of regulation in distance education challenging. Other people may relish the responsibility and flexibility of distance learning. However you choose to study, your success will be a product of your determination and passion. It is really easy to get distracted living on campus, but I already had tha t problem before coming to uni so I probably would also have trouble studying by distance education, says Mackenzie. And with online and correspondence courses providing you with the same qualification as an on-campus education, it is up to you to tailor your experiences and knowledge to better serve your career. As long as you do all the hands-on work placements and assessments you will come away with a great education. After studying by distance I was able to get a job in aged care, says Hill. If you are interested in studying by distance, we have a course to suit almost every subject area and level of qualification from beauty therapy to education, nursing to IT. See all courses here.
