Your Ultimate Guide to HR Certification - Workology

Your Ultimate Guide to HR Certification - Workology HR Certification Institution Access on-demand SHRM and HRCI certified courses online with LEARN by Workology. LEARN makes HR recertification easy. Click here. I had been in Human Resources for just a few years when my Should-have-been-my-mentor friend told me about HR certification. At the time, HRCI was the only game in town for HR certification and you had 3 choices: PHR, SPHR or GPHR. I was fairly new to the HR field so I went for the PHR (just barely qualified). I took a review course offered at the local university and passed!! I was one of the few in my office that had the certification and my boss made a big deal out of it. Since that time, HRCI has expanded their certifications and now offer 7 different certifications. In 2014, SHRM introduced their own certification. There was lots of talk (and there still is) about the need for another certification. SHRM offered those certified by HRCI the ability to cross-walk to the equivalent SHRM certification for free in 2015, so I did take advantage of that and now hold both a PHR and SHRM-CP. Ive had my PHR for 12 years and have no plans to give it up just re-certified in August. My SHRM-CP is up in 2018 and I am currently debating to continue it, let it lapse or upgrade to the SHRM-SCP. SHRM currently offers 2 levels of certification: SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP (senior). Im also getting ready to lead a certification preparation course for our local SHRM chapter, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to familiarize myself with the different certifications available. This will simply be the different certifications each group offers. Which is right for you? Well, thats up to you and hopefully knowing a little about each one, without commentary, will help you. HR Certification Institution HRCI has been in the HR certification business for over 40 years. They are an independent non-profit organization and work with businesses and organizations worldwide to offer certification and re-certification opportunities for their certified members. Credits can be earned through  attending conferences and seminars to volunteering and  contributing resources to the advancement of the HR profession. HRCI certification is good for 3 years. You can track your activities through the HRCI website and submit for re-certification through the same tracking page. HRCI no longer has a testing window and eligible professionals can test at their convenience once they have applied and received approval for testing. Exam approval is valid for 180 days. HRCI offers 7 different certifications: aPHR The Associate Professional in HR is for the brand new professional with no extensive HR experience. The minimum requirement is a high school diploma. You would need to have some knowledge, but you may be able to get it from college course work or through the review materials. PHR The Professional in HR is for the mid-level professional who knows the technical and operational side of human resources. This professional has worked in the field for a few years and is familiar with laws and regulations (federal and state) that affect the work in the department. Minimum qualifications to sit for the PHR exam: 1 year of professional level HR experience and a Masters degree or higher 2 years of professional level HR experience and a Bachelors degree 4 years of professional level HR experience and a high school diploma Wait, what is Professional level HR experience?? HRCI has a list of approved job titles, however, they also include this definition: A professional HR position refers to an individual explicitly engaged and qualified within various aspects of the HR practice. Your level of actual work, experience and responsibilities make you accountable for day-to-day HR activities, practices and deliverables. To be considered “professional-level,” an HR position must include: The ability to use independent judgment and discretion in performing work duties. A level of specialized knowledge in the HR field with some authority for decision-making. In-depth work requirements, such as data gathering, analysis and interpretation. Interaction with a broad range of individuals, including key personnel. Individual accountability for results. This definition is used in the remainder of their certification qualifications. PHRca The Professional in HR California is for the mid-level professional who has mastered the HR laws, regulations and practices specific to the unique laws in California. The PHRca is for professionals who either practice in California or  are  responsible for human resource management in California. You do not have to be located in California to earn a PHRca. Minimum qualifications are the same as for the PHR exam. SPHR The Senior Professional in HR is, just as it sounds like, for the more senior HR professional who is responsible for strategic planning for not just the HR department, but the overall organization. These professionals will be familiar with the business as a whole and are able to think about how the HR processes affect the rest of the business. At this level, the practitioner is thinking about how HR fits into the organizational goals and how HR can help the organization achieve those goals. Qualifications for the SPHR are the same as PHR, except you need 3 additional years of experience for each degree level. GPHR The Global Professional in HR is for those HR professionals with experience in more than one country  including strategies of globalization development of HR policies and initiatives that support organizational global growth. Minimum qualifications for the GPHR: 2 years of experience in a global professional-level HR position  and  a Master’s degree or higher 3 years of experience in a global professional-level HR position  and  a Bachelor’s degree 4 years of experience in a global professional-level HR position and  a high school diploma Global HR experience is defined as having direct, cross-border HR responsibilities for two or more countries or regions. PHRi and SPHRi HRCI also has 2 certifications for professionals who work outside of the United States. The PHRi and SPHRi are just like their PHR and SPHR counterparts, the only difference that the experience is from a single international setting. So, if you work in the US, you would sit for the PHR or SPHR and if you are outside the US, the PHRi or SPHRi. SHRM Certification SHRM has served the HR profession for over 65 years. They are a non-profit organization, offering a variety of opportunities for the HR professional to learn and connect. You are able to track your activities online or through their app. Some SHRM sponsored events will automatically add your activities to your tracker. SHRM offers 2 application and  2 exam windows each year. Their site will have the most recent information for application and exam deadlines. SHRM-CP The SHRM-Certified Professional is for the mid-level practitioner  who implements policies and strategies, serves as a point of contact for staff and stakeholders, deliver HR services, and perform operational HR functions. When determining eligibility, SHRM does give additional credit for a degree in an HR-related program. There are a few ways for a degree to be HR related and you can find them here. Minimum qualifications for the SHRM-CP: HR related graduate degree and in first year of HR role Non-HR related graduate degree and 1 year of experience in an HR role HR related bachelors degree and 1 year of experience in an HR role Non-HR related bachelors degree and 2 years of experience in an HR role HR related less than a bachelors degree and 3 years of experience in an HR role Non-HR related less than a bachelors degree and 4 years of experience in an HR role Wait, what on earth does Less than a Bachelors Degree  mean?? Well, its less complex than it sounds: anything that comes after a high school diploma/GED and before an earned Bachelors degree. And, how does SHRM define HR role?   Its HR-related experience that relates to work in any of the 15 functional areas of HR knowledge which comprise the technical competency  HR Expertise, identified in the SHRM BoCK. SHRM-SCP The SHRM-Senior Certified Professional is, again, for that Senior level practitioner who is  developing strategies, leading the HR function, fostering influence in the community, analyzing performance metrics, and aligning HR strategies to organizational goals. The senior professional is looking at the organization as a whole, thinking about how HR fits into the organizational goals and how HR can help the organization achieve those goals. What the House Of Tomorrow Can Teach Us Today

What the House Of Tomorrow Can Teach Us Today What the House Of Tomorrow Can Teach Us Today Those were the descriptive words that were required to characterize late-twentieth century lodging. By the center 1980s Americans and Western Europeans should be living in white plastic Swiss crosses with windows coating the arms. Like pies in plain view, the houses were to be built on platforms. The group that planned the Monsanto House of the Future, a Disneyland fascination from 1957 to 1967, initially set out to make their vision for a moderate home for the families running into the lodging market following World War II. Planned and built by Monsanto, Marvin Goody and Richard Hamilton of MIT, and Walt Disney Imagineering, the house was imagined as something that could be rapidly and economically developed on about any territory and could withstand most any power of nature, said Gary Van Zante, design caretaker at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Museum. That is not the home they got done with, and just in little part since they were working with the most mainstream material of their day-in particular plastic-and with building strategies that hadn't yet found that material, he said. In 2010, Van Zante gave an introduction on the Monsanto House of the Future. At the point when it was finished, Disneyland guests could visit the place of things to come set in the distant year 1986, complete with a nonexistent family and cutting edge family unit machines, for example, microwaves. We may giggle at the retro-future, yet it's something we can't get away. Projections of things to come need to speak to what's really occurring in the days wherein they're envisioned. How Lawyers Can Learn From Failure

How Lawyers Can Learn From Failure How Lawyers Can Learn From Failure Before SpaceX's effective dispatch of its goliath Falcon Heavy rocket a week ago, eccentric extremely rich person and friends CEO Elon Musk told columnists, there is a decent possibility this beast rocket explodes. It didn't, however a considerable lot of SpaceX's past rocket dispatches had fizzled. The way that Musk recognize the chance of a disastrous disappointment fits with his ethos, and that of numerous effective Silicon Valley business visionaries that disappointment is a fundamental piece of accomplishment. Disappointment is an alternative here. In case you're not coming up short, you're not developing enough. Elon even discharges famous YouTube recordings of all of SpaceX rocket disappointments to underline that achievement is certainly not a straight, solid way. Those in the hazard antagonistic legitimate calling may not be as ready to discuss disappointment as the startup world, however that doesn't mean legal counselors shouldn't be taking a gander at disappointment through a comparable focal point. There is an explanation bosses ask the feared talk with inquiry: educate me concerning a period you fizzled. Everyone will fall flat, yet the individuals who gain from it are bound to not make similar mistakes and bound to succeed later. At the point when I'm gotten some information about disappointment in my profession, I have a simple answer. A little more than a year subsequent to moving on from graduate school, I was laid off from my activity as a lesser partner at a BigLaw firm. It was pulverizing, and left a major hole in my resume; it took over a year for me to locate another lasting lawyer position. In the middle of I did some voyaging (and soul looking). I cut back my costs, bit the bullet and accomplished over a half year of agreement doc survey work. Furthermore, whenever the open door emerged to be a staff lawyer at another BigLaw firm, I buckled down and industriously that following a year I was recruited to be a case partner. More than two years after I was laid off, I had mauled my way back to where I was in any case. Presently this all occurred during the worldwide money related emergency 10 years prior. I could without much of a stretch have quite recently accused the economy and misfortune for being out of a vocation. What's more, I in some cases did only that. Yet, with some an ideal opportunity to reflect, I took the disappointment on myself and pondered what I had done to lose that employment. All things considered, my specialization just laid off two lawyers, and I was one of them. At the point when I mirrored a piece, I understood there were a great deal of little disappointments. I neglected to do legitimate due tirelessness on the firm, since I truly was anything but an extraordinary fit for the firm and its customer base in any case. I had neglected to truly interface with any of the accomplices at the firm who could have had my back when the firm was concluding who to give up. I accepted my position for without a doubt, and didn't generally hustle to discover progressively billable wor k when I was in a break. These disappointments on my part made me an undeniable applicant when the company's fortunes turned and they were hoping to release somebody. Knowing these things, I was not liable to submit similar missteps at my next firm. More effective legal advisors than I have had comparable learning encounters in their vocations. Incomparable Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor spent her 2L summer at Paul, Weiss however was no offered by the firm toward the finish of her mid year. In her personal history My Beloved World, Justice Sotomayor composed: The feeling of disappointment was affirmed when I closed my stretch as a late spring partner without getting a proposition for employment. … There were some around me urging me to see the dismissal as a statement of predisposition or individual enmity, yet I had seen no proof of that, while my feeling of having failed to meet expectations appeared to me alright validated. For this agony of disappointment the main genuine disappointment since having taken a crack at graduate school I had just myself to fault, and realizing that, I was significantly shaken. The route forward was overwhelming if self-evident. I expected to make sense of what I was fouling up and fix it. At any rate I needed to gain proficiency with this region of law, thus I pursued Professor Ralph Winter's class on antitrust just as one called Commercial Transactions. The trickier part would ace the aptitude that was at the core of being a legal advisor, my lack wherein had been uncovered: how to compose a brief, not as some study hall practice seeking to a target examination of the case law, yet as a bit of powerful promotion, propelling the interests of my customer. In the two sorts of therapeutic endeavors, I would do what I'd generally done: separate the test into littler difficulties, which I could continue ahead with in my orderly style. Undoubtedly I would need to substantiate myself at another sort of work in the legitimate calling before I could even think about joining a huge business firm. Meanwhile, the new taste of absolute disappointment from that late spring would remain in my mouth. The memory of this injury, which I was resolved not to rehash, while not choking out my desire, would overhang all my vocations decision until I turned into an appointed authority. Like me, Justice Sotomayor fizzled at her first spell at a business law office, and she searched inside at the things she had done to cause that disappointment so she would not commit those errors once more. Sotomayor found a new line of work in the Manhattan DA's office out of graduate school, at that point moved into private practice at a Manhattan boutique, before joining the seat and in the end the Supreme Court (clearly she's accomplished more to transform her disappointment into progress than I have). Every single fruitful individuals share this for all intents and purpose: they have flopped before and gained from it. While your disappointments may not be as evident and as glaring as a having a rocket explode, getting canned from your first genuine activity, or getting no-offered as a mid year partner, you should in any case think about those disappointments and ensure you have gained from them. Falling flat at something won't keep you from progress as a lawyer, however neglecting to gain from those disappointments certainly can.

Are Unlimited Holidays a Cure for Burnout

Are Unlimited Holidays a Cure for Burnout The workplace epidemic of ‘burnout’ is on the rise and experts have suggested that unlimited holidays may provide a solution. Perkbox recently conducted a survey of 1,342 working Brits to reveal opinions surrounding unlimited holidays and the impact that these policies are having on the fight against burnout. Perkbox’s study shows that this initiative is indeed backed by many. 39% of employed people see unlimited holidays as either a great or good idea to help them switch off. This figure rises to a staggering 70% at the C-suite level. What’s more, when looking at how long it takes people to switch off from work on vacation, it becomes apparent why unlimited holidays may be necessary. On the one hand, 30% of people take 1-2 days to switch off from work, the results revealed, whilst almost 1 in 5 (18%) take 3-4 days. On the other, the most popular amount of holiday to take off in one go was 5-6 days. It’s therefore clear that employees’ vacation time is often cut short by thoughts of the office or uncompleted tasks signaling that limited holiday policies may no longer allow for enough time to fully recharge and combat burnout year-round. In terms of being a ‘cure’, 1/3 agree that unlimited holidays help to alleviate stress and burnout and that more holidays are needed to compensate for intense day-to-day working schedules. As for whether the policy actually works, 26% believe unlimited holidays have decreased the number of sick leave days taken, rising to an impressive 37% of the C-suite level. Whether unlimited holidays can actually cure burnout or are simply a means of hiding it, is yet to be proven. But for the benefits to be reaped by employees, the thought appears to be that workplace leaders must communicate such policies with genuity in the company 26% of respondents believe that unlimited holidays don’t help alleviate stress and burnout in the workplace unless workplace leaders ‘show that they really mean them’. Madlena Pozlevic, Employee Experience Lead at Perkbox says: “It’s clear that employees can find it hard to switch off from work on holiday. Factors such as the ease at which we can communicate with work, heavy workloads and the growing expectation of high performance, are leading to a rise in burnout and the need to be strict with ourselves when taking time to switch off and de-stress. Employees should feel entitled to have a strong work/life balance, but for any policies aiming to achieve this, such as unlimited holiday, to genuinely work, they need to be utilised. What’s more, with the results of this study clearly showing that C-suite Execs are in agreement with the policy, it’s vital that these leaders communicate such thoughts with the whole company clearly to avoid anyone from ever feeling like an ‘office slacker’ when using them.” About the author:  Perkbox  is a platform that provides a unique employee experience, enriching the personal and working life of employees.
